Happy Friday Reader!
Let's get right into it.
The truth about change is: it only requires three things.
Discipline and consistency.
"Wait, Kosta - that's only two things, and they sound so serious."
Ok, so the process of change requires two things, but you need one more for it to actually work.
The most important factor.
The one that creates alignment within and means that your daily actions are moving you towards your goal.
That's right, it's the "c-word".
Commitment.
(Which has also a powerful decision connected to it.)
Stay with me friends, we're about to go off on a joyride with Nature, Spirituality and Einstein.
Why?
Because.
- Nature is constantly showing us this process.
- Change is a process of spiritual growth - let's define spiritual growth here as "developing a greater knowing of the Self and understanding of others".
- Einstein likes nature.
It also starts to get a bit quantum - but without getting all "energy fields" and "string theory"; it's much simpler than that. (and you may have already experienced it in some way)
When you embark on a change process, you can't help but learn more about these aspects of life (Nature + Spirituality + Einstein - maybe we don't need to talk about Einstein).
So let's jump in my all-wheel-drive station wagon, and head north for an hour because nature is waiting to teach us how this all works.
Straight up route 58; we pass a lively little town called Nago.
We hit the intersection with a small Family Mart on one side, and 7-11 on the other, and take a dive right, up into the mountains, through some winding, damp, forest-y roads, until we hit a u-turn in the road.
This is our spot. (now you have the secret directions)
Let's jump out and hike over to the waterfall.
The air is a little cooler.
The feeling is fresh.
That familiar sensation hits you - "finally, I'm out of the Matrix!"
Just kidding.
It's more like a deep breath that becomes a sigh of relief, as you fill your being with that pure green-clean air.
and it feels great.
Makes you want to shut down your computer and head for the hills right?
You're already there.
The hike is a great time to get out of your usual headspace.
You're kind of busy on a basic sense-level: seeing your surroundings, smelling the air, and feeling your body connecting with the non-concrete pathway through the jungle. You can't be thinking about the usual stuff that's going on in your life when you enter this mode.
You create a new space to be in.
A space to zoom out.
A chance to see where you're heading in your life, and if that aligns with your vision.
Nature time is powerful in providing perspective on life.
15 minutes have passed, and here we are.
The waterfall gushes into the large pool of pure fresh, cold water.
Why don't you join me for a cleansing swim?
Passing under the waterfall, sitting on the rocks behind, watching the water coming down. The's nothing but the sound and spray of the water continuously pounding down into the pool.
It's the perfect contrast of deafening sounds and a quietening mind.
A great way to observe nature.
So why are we taking about waterfalls and change?
Every change is like a waterfall.
Not the waterfall you see now.
That's the result of the commitment, discipline and consistency.
But the waterfall from it's beginnings.
The desire for change either comes from:
a) internal feedback from an undesirable result, or
b) external motivation - seeing something that resonates with our being - that in our hearts we desire to be able to do.
Then we start making the change:
- We decide on trying something to get us to our goal (what)
- We make a schedule for it (when)
- We have a reason for it (why)
And then we start.
drop
We make the first drop.
Of water (or in this case: investment into our change)
Nothing happens.
drop
We keep adding.
Still, nothing happens. or maybe something happens.
100 drops later, it's getting a little wet.
Something is changing - but it's very subtle.
Here's where a lot of people drop out.
The results aren't coming - why would I keep doing this thing?
Side note: I got a patience award in high school.
It may have been a joke. But this part of the process is where patience is key.
"Remember your commitment!!!" (write this down somewhere and make it visible - like a post-it on your bathroom mirror or bedroom light switch), or it's back to the old ways for you!
…and the old results come back very quickly. (because that waterfall was already flowing)
When you choose to show up (commitment), carve out that time to invest in the change - regardless of your feelings (discipline), and then keep doing it every day (consistency),
Those drops keep adding up.
And then you get it.
In a powerful stream of results.
It's why people appear to create success/health/skills/(insert desirable thing here) overnight, but in reality, it's just this.
To drop the little wisdom bomb my Aikido teacher shared with me
and that nature was so kind to remind me of:
Every waterfall starts with a single drop.
Like every change you're making in your life.
You just need to start with one drop.
Einstein said it in another way. (It was probably falsely quoted, either way - it sounds good)
If you remember your highschool maths class (for most this is largely a forgotten time), you probably learned about compound interest - a seemingly boring topic - this is the human interpretation of the waterfall effect.
Einstein was probably quoted saying "compound interest is the 8th wonder of the world. He who understands it… earns it, he who doesn't... pays it."
The results you want, or don't want?
What does this have to do with Ayurveda, Kosta?
Well, you may have gathered in your time here that Ayurveda connects us with the wisdom of Nature.
It guides us to make changes that support our best health - usually reflected to us by nature.
By being consistent with ourselves, by deciding to be healthy, and by stepping away from the "drops" that don't serve us - we can harness that power of nature.
In summary:
If you are feeling stuck, or not getting the results you want:
- Remember the waterfall - reflect on your commitment, your discipline and consistency.
- Listen to the feedback from your body - this is the evidence to guide your next steps.
- Make a decision - the inner commitment to making this change will begin to reflect in the outer parts of your life. Try it. (this is the quantum part I wanted to get to - it's not that wild, right?)
- Be patient.
The key takeaway is that it's so nice to be in nature.
My goal is that you make your next Saturday (or Sunday) plans to get out into nature for the day. The benefits are huge.
I hope you had a fun ride here with me today.
Wishing you a week full of consistent drops and aligned choices!
Thanks again for joining in.
Peace
